This could prove positive, to get more insight in how we can protect ourselves, or negative if all categories of greedy multinationals dive in and rob the depths of resources and riches... strict supervision required. 'Only a fifth of the ocean floor is currently mapped in detail, because even the most modern techniques are of little use in tremendous depths. But knowledge of the deep sea is indispensable to protect people from climate change and natural disasters.

Thus it is crucial in our fight against climate change. Martin Jakobsson, professor of oceanography and glaciology at Stockholm University, knows this better than anyone. For decades he has been "mapping" the ocean floor around Greenland, the Arctic and the North Atlantic.

The warm water that rises here appears to be the direct result of the relief of the bottom. That determines the direction and speed of ocean currents, Jakobsson explains. Ocean currents in the northern regions, for example, play a decisive role in the melting ice sheet of Greenland. "And without a map of the soil it is impossible to predict the size of those warm water flows," says Jakobsson.

Little pieces of map are added. Thus, the mathematical models of the melting glaciers are becoming increasingly detailed.

But a more detailed map of the ocean floor also helps predict the impact of tsunamis.'

Ther is a big but though... al of this leads to more knowledge of the riches and resources there... when mapped out properly the ocean could become new ground for prospecting multinationals. So it has to be done properly and with respect for our planet!
